Mod chips

Just read this…  http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6928177.stm

I’m a bit confused on the part where installing a mod chip on your Wii helps you with money laundering.  Overall, I say this is a bunch of crap.  What you do with a piece of hardware once you buy it should be your business.  You can’t reverse engineer it and sell it, but you’re free to reverse engineer it and build one for yourself.  So why then, can’t you open it up and make a few modifications?

Here’s an idea.  Why not raid houses and arrest people who have installed a new harddrive on their computer?  Nevermind that it’s legal…  If they have a bigger harddrive, they can copy more movies.  Quick!  Arrest them!

Or, why don’t we spend time catching illegal immigrants?  I’m pretty sure they have more of an impact on our economy than people installing mod chips in their gaming consoles.  Oh, probably because the hardware the companies are insisting be protected was put together by illegal immigrants?

Funny how private companies who perceive they are losing money can dictate what our government’s policing force concentrates on, huh?
